Reel and bedknife grinding
Grinding is what restores a cutting unit to factory geometry. Backlapping touches up an edge; grinding corrects the shape the edge sits on.
Spin grinding
Sharpens the cutting edges of the reel blades by matching the original angle, and brings a reel that has worn conical back to a true cylinder.
Relief grinding
Removes material from behind the cutting edge to reduce friction and extend the time between services. Worth doing on a reel that will see heavy hours.
Bedknife grinding
The bedknife is ground flat on a surface table and given correct front and top angles, so contact is even across the full width rather than at one end.
Backlapping vs grinding
Backlapping is a sound short-term touch-up between grinds. It will not correct a coned reel or a bellied bedknife. We recommend grinding at least once a season.
